Mr. Dowd,

Enjoyed this article however no solution provided to the problems. The only solution as I see it, is for Democrats to win House an Senate majorities in the 2022 election. I sent you (and every elected representative in Washington) a strategic plan outline on how to do exactly that. Never received a response. Therefore I would add a 4th problem to your list. Politicians such as yourself do not respond to, or engage with, ordinary voters such as myself that have possible solutions. So, if you are serious about addressing our "failed stress test" please contact me. I will forward to you the complete strategy. You will find it worthy of consideration and further discussion. stevearonson@staronmarketing.com

Great thinking runs in the family.

I also think we have heart problems, the kind of heart problems that are not Christian/religious and what afflicts so many Christians and other perverted interpretations of religion. “Love and respect thy neighbor”. I do not think we are capable of a peaceful reconciliation of the ultra right portion of the Republican Party. They won’t change and with the leadership of trump, will get more hostile and violent.

Well stated, Matthew! Without common facts guiding us our democracy remains unwell.

Very sorry you decided not to run in a very important race in Texas. We need more people like you to help change our course. We haven’t much time, if the Democrats lose in November, Democracy may not make it.

The question now is, how do we get the truly sick to take the stress test? Historically, democracies generally fail after two hundred years, mostly because the majority of the population at the end of the two hundred years have taken for granted the benefits they enjoy. The many don’t vote. The few who do vote do so more on name recognition than understanding the candidates’ political positions or qualifications. Until that changes history will continue to repeat itself. People will continue to be mesmerized by the loudest most talented actors. Democracy will fail.

Well said Mathew. But, why have both the left and the right gone to such extremities. We need both sides, but they have to be close enough to work together and sometimes, when the country needs help, they should be able to cross the aisle. Until that that happens, we are knackered.
